Motorola i930 Smartphone for Nextel/Sprint

Motorola i930 Smartphone for Nextel/Sprint

The long anticipated i930 will soon be dangling from many a belt across the country and around the world. While this clamshell Windows Mobile Smartphone has a few firsts and some highly desirable features, it also has some missing virtues, which are puzzling.

I like the fact that it has a SIM card for portability of accounts and an SD card slot for expanded storage capacity. It runs on Windows Mobile 2003 SE and a 180 MHz processor with 32 MB ROM and 32 MB RAM. It has 64 MB of non-volatile memory.

This phone operates on the 900/900 iDEN network in the United States and can switch to the 900/1800 GSM frequencies overseas, but it will not support 850 or 1900 GSM bands domestically. A big plus is Nextel’s national and international PTT walkie-talkie service.

The i930 comes loaded with software including the usual Windows Mobile Microsoft suite. In addition, it comes with the ClearVue Suite for viewing Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and PDF documents. There is also a set of Java Powered Utilities: FindMe, TeleNav, My-Cast Weather, and TrimbleOutdoors, all of which are subscription services.

In the box, you get a CD with Microsoft ActiveSync 3.8 and Outlook 2002, both outdated programs. There is a plastic swivel belt clip, along with charging and USB cables. The cradle does not have a dock for charging an additional battery.

What Rules

• Nextel national and international Walkie Talkie service
• International connectivity with GSM networks
• 64 MB non-volatile memory
• Camera with flash
• SIM Card
• SD expansion slot
• Flip open button

What Drools

• Unsightly, cumbersome external antenna
• Slow 180 MHz processor
• Windows Mobile 2003 instead of WM 5
• Cradle will not charge extra battery
• No Bluetooth

Conclusion

The most disappointing aspects of this phone are its lack of Bluetooth, which eliminates the possibility of GPS, BT external key...
