HTC Launches Mogul for Sprint

HTC Launches Mogul for Sprint

Sprint users can now rejoice with the launch of the new Windows Mobile 6 phone from HTC—the Mogul. The Mogul joins the family of HTC devices based on the newer class of phones that include the AT&T 8525 and the T-Mobile Wing. The Mogul has the distinction of being the first CDMA version of this class in the U.S. and replaces the aging PPC-6700.

The Mogul sports the updated Windows Mobile 6 Professional Edition operating system as does the T-Mobile Wing. The AT&T 8525 is due to have an upgrade to WM6 by the end of July. Some of the high points of WM6 include tighter integration with corporate email, HTML email ability, an updated interface, Windows Live Search and numerous minor updates to the operating system.

One nice touch the Mogul has is a slider switch on the side to quickly activate its WiFi b/g option. Sprint has graciously included a 512MB MicroSD card with the Mogul to help store your stuff. Like other HTC phones, the memory card slot is limited to a 2GB maximum capacity.

Other features of the Mogul are: a convenient scroll wheel, 2 mega-pixel camera with flash and video recording, a speedy 400MHz processor, generous 256MB of memory, High speed EV-DO support, slide out keyboard, voice recognition software, Microsoft Office and much more.

The Sprint Mogul is available now for 299.99 after rebate and a two year commitment.

Sprint's New HTC Mogul, Getting More Out of Your Device

Sprint’s New HTC Mogul, Getting More Out of Your Device

The new Windows Mobile 6 devices are starting to appear, and this week we’ll note the announcement and imminent arrival of the Sprint HTC Mogul. Also, we’ll look at new offerings on Microsoft’s
Web site that help you get more out of your device.

Sprint’s HTC Mogul

Lat week Sprint announced that they’ll soon be releasing the HTC Mogul, and a flurry of reviews appeared online. We used to use the generic term PC Phone Edition for this type of device, but now the official lingo is Windows Mobile Professional. Anyway, it has the form factor of a Pocket PC, with a 240 x 320 pixel, 2.8-inch display.

Like many such devices nowadays, it has a slide-out QWERTY keyboard and includes a 2-megapixel camera, Bluetooth and
Wi-Fi wireless, and broadband capability.

The latter is newsworthy, because it’s the first device to support the new EV-DO Rev. A standard. Most mobile devices are pretty fast when you connect to the
Internet via Wi-Fi, but they’re pretty slow via the data connection of your provider’s network. EV-DO on my Verizon Treo runs at around 90kbps, but Sprint’s implementation of EV-DO Rev. A promises download speeds of 450–800kbps and upload speeds of 300–400kbps.

According to a review in Laptop Magazine , this is the fastest cellular data connection you can get. But Rev. A won’t be immediately available. Until it is, Laptop Magazine says that the current EV-DO in the Mogul is still plenty fast.

In general, the reviews are quite positive, emphasizing the speed and performance and slender form-factor. You can find a solid report by Judie Hughes on Gear Diary that includes a written review, photo gallery, and video. Also, you can find a very effective video review on PhoneScoop and a useful video on jkOnTheRun . Lisa Gade of has a thorough review on MobileTechReview . And Engadget has a hands-on review and photo gallery.

Microsoft’s Windows Mobile Owners Circle

Microsoft’s Windows Mobile site has had so many iterations that I never know what to find there. The latest is their Windows Mobile Owners Circle , which is a great resource for all levels of users. The various sections help you be more productive using your device; offer you free ring tones, wallpapers and themes, and games; and give you a real trove of tips, how-to’s, and tutorials, including the contents of our 2007 edition of The Ultimate Smartphone and Pocket P...
