the only flip-style Windows Mobile smartphones that
are currently available from major wireless carriers.

Bottom line: With tiny screens and small numeric keypads, flip-style smartphones are built primarily for their phone capabilities. If you want something that looks and functions like a traditional cell phone, and occasionally want to use some of the other features found in a Windows Mobile device, a flip-style smartphone might be for you. If you plan on doing a substantial amount of e-mailing, Web browsing, and file viewing, you should look at the other form factors.



2: CDMA vs. GSM, locked vs. unlocked


After you have figured out the type of smartphone you want, you need to find out if it's available for the network you want to use. Two cellular network technologies are in use in the U.S.—CDMA and GSM.

  • CDMA (Code-Division Multiple Access) technology is used primarily in the U.S. and Canada and is incorporated into the wireless networks operated by Sprint, Verizon, and other regional carriers. CDMA phones are less versatile than GSM phones since they cannot be used overseas. In addition, CDMA phones must be programmed by the carrier when purchased and cannot be easily switched to another CDMA network. CDMA phones will not work with GSM networks.
